Russian explorers drive through North Pole in amphibious vehicles

A group of Russian explorers traveled from Russia’s northern coast to Resolute, Canada, by way of the North Pole – all in specialized amphibious vehicles.

The adventure, sponsored by the Russian Geographic Society, was part of the Marine Live-Ice Automobile Expedition, which uses specialized vehicles called Yemelya to cross frozen terrain.

Mariinsky Theater II debuts in St. Petersburg

The Marrinsky Theater II, a $700 million, 2,000 seat venue in the heart of St. Petersburg, formally opened Thursday with a gala concert.

After a decade of development, the theater debuted with a concert opened by Valery Gergiev, the highly-regarded artistic director of the theater and recent recipient of one of President Vladimir Putin’s “Heroes of Labor” titles. The performances that followed included many notable Russian talents, including soprano Anne Netrebko and ballerina Diana Vishneva.

City authorities crack down on illegal cabs in drive to improve Moscow taxis

Recent Russian reforms to encourage private entrepreneurs to move from the shadow into the regular economy are bearing fruit: take the example of new regulations designed to improve the experience for visitors making use of Moscow’s taxis.


Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Moscow taxis operating legally jumped from 9,000 to 30,000 thanks to a reform in the taxi regulatory system. But this still only represents around 50% of the taxis working in Moscow. The aim is to have all taxis registered and working legally by mid 2014 – around 55,000 taxis in all.
