Fabio Cacciatori at SPIEF: Russia as a technology development partner

By: Fabio Cacciatori on June 23, 2012

Based in Turin, the Virtual Reality & Multi Media Park is a leader in the digital creativity industry in Italy. Their products are produced through collaboration between designers, engineers, artists and other developers to design and exploit emerging technologies for use in everyday life and business needs. At SPIEF 2012, CEO Fabio Cacciatori gave Modern Russia an overview of his company’s business and its work in Russia.

For us at the Virtual Reality & Multimedia Park, Russia is a natural target for growth due to a number of different reasons. First and foremost, the economy is maturing and Russian institutions are helping push the development of new technologies and related skills. With Skolkovo, Russia is taking a big step forward in opening new possibilities for collaboration, which consequently impacts the flow of the trade between Italy and Russia that is constantly growing. The current relations between the two countries – both economic and commercial - are extremely positive, and have been for a long time now. For example, the cities of Turin and St. Petersburg are currently in discussions over collaboration in several different technology related fields. Moreover, the Polytechnic University of Turin is an important institution known throughout Europe for educating and training technology students. Combined with cities like Turin, Moscow and St. Petersburg who are full of talented, technology savvy citizens, the potential for a profitable collaboration is already present. And this is what I hope it will happen.

At the Virtual Reality and Multimedia Park we are actively working to strengthen our partnership with Russian companies and establish mutually beneficial projects. For this reason, we now have a Russian partner in Moscow who is our starting point in defining cooperation agreements in the field of virtual reality industry. Moreover, we are looking to start common projects in the film industry through cooperation with Russian partners, best exemplified by our subsidiary Lumiq's recent co-development agreement with Trikita Entertainment for the remake of the movie “Amphibian Men.” Our collaboration with other research centers, universities and enterprises is one of our main strengths and makes us as a point of reference and a catalyst for other business realities with the aim of developing integrated projects. To build on this, I decided to participate in SPIEF 2012 because the forum is a concrete opportunity to establish new relationships and increase knowledge our knowledge of Russia for all Italian players, be they public or private.

The Virtual Reality and Multimedia Park’s areas of expertise include:

Virtual Reality (VR): Using innovation to simulate reality in real time uses, our software lab develops simulations that use skills necessary for the completion of a host of projects ranging from design, planning and simulation engines. Development is also increasing in the medical, entertainment and cultural heritage sectors. In the construction industry, the Park has developed VR tools that enhance design possibilities in fields like architecture, urban development, and products like trains, ships, airplanes and even event planning. Our VR simulations also offer a powerful tool for staff training for potentially dangerous situations in factory and plant operations. This has been especially true in our work with the oil and gas industry, where through collaboration with partners from the U.S. our software has been used in training purposes.

Computer Graphic (CGI/3D): By fostering innovation through the creation of images, the Park initially began this facet of our work as a pipeline for the development of animated movies. Using algorithms that simulate the behavior of lighting, optical and physical characteristics of objects, we began working on the production of movies and television. As a result of this work, we were also able to develop our expertise in new industries like architecture, engineering, and art – areas where CGI is in high demand.

Multimedia: Through the use of different media formats such video, still and animated images, music, text and above all interactivity, our developers have made all formats available on a number of different technological platforms. The use of these innovative products is as pervasive for phone and tablet apps as it is for television. This pervasiveness is why we have worked with Italian institutions to organize the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italy’s reunification at the Officine Grandi Riparazioni (OGR) in Turin.

Lumiq: Last but certainly not least, our shared company is a well known player in the entertainment field. A fully integrated center for all stages of film production, it is one of few of its kind in Italy. In addition to producing live action and animation movies, Lumiq is a distributor as well.
